Colts QB Anthony Richardson Dislocates Right Pinkie In Preseason Opener Against Ravens

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered a dislocated pinkie on his right, throwing hand early in the team’s 2025 preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Thursday night. The injury occurred during a sack by Ravens linebacker David Ojabo on the Colts’ second offensive drive. Richardson was slow to get up after the hit and left the game, with backup quarterback Daniel Jones taking over for the remainder of the first quarter and rest of the game.

Before the injury, Richardson had completed two of three passes for 21 yards, helping the Colts take an early field goal. The sack that caused the dislocation resulted in an eight-yard loss. Colts head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that the pinkie had dislocated, describing it as having “popped out, popped back in.” He labeled Richardson “day-to-day” with no specific timetable set for his return.

“I feel like I was doing decent out there, besides that one play right there,” Richardson said postgame, adding optimism about the upcoming opportunities. “Everything happens for a reason. Still got next game, so I’m not too worried about it.”

Richardson was only planned to play approximately one and a half quarters for this preseason game as part of the Colts’ preseason rotation strategy. Backup Daniel Jones, who is competing fiercely for the starting quarterback job, took the majority of snaps following Richardson’s departure and is set to begin for the Colts in their next preseason game on August 16 against the Green Bay Packers.

Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, has had his stint with the Colts marred by recurring injuries and inconsistent performance. Over two NFL seasons, he has completed just over 50% of his passes, throwing 11 touchdowns against 13 interceptions, holding an 8-7 record as a starter. Conversely, Jones, a former New York Giants first-round pick with six seasons of starting experience, is striving to revitalize his career after a difficult 24-44-1 record in the league. He completed 64.1% of his passes with 70 touchdowns versus 47 interceptions during his time in New York.

The Colts are now facing uncertainty around their starting quarterback situation as Richardson’s health and ability to remain on the field are in question. Coach Steichen and the Colts medical staff will monitor Richardson’s recovery closely to determine how the injury impacts the regular season roster decisions.

The Colts ultimately lost the preseason game 24-16 to Baltimore, but the main focus postgame remained on Richardson’s health and the quarterback competition going forward.
