Five Soldiers Injured in Fort Stewart Shooting; Suspect in Custody

FORT STEWART, Ga., August 6, 2025 – An active shooter incident at the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area of Fort Stewart led to five soldiers being shot on Wednesday morning, authorities confirmed. The suspected shooter, who is also a soldier, was taken into custody less than an hour after the attack.

The shooting was first reported at 10:56 a.m., prompting an immediate lockdown across parts of the military base. Commanding Officer Colonel William “Gabe” Weaver issued orders for lockdown of the base including Wright and Evans Army Airfields to secure personnel and prevent further harm.

By 11:35 a.m., officials confirmed the suspect was apprehended, and a subsequent statement from Fort Stewart assured, “There is no active threat to the community.” The military base, located approximately 40 miles southwest of Savannah, Georgia, remains on heightened alert as investigations continue.

Of the five soldiers injured, two were transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, a Level 1 trauma facility. The conditions of all wounded soldiers have not been fully disclosed, but no fatalities have been reported to date.

The Army swiftly implemented emergency protocols, advising soldiers and personnel to stay indoors, lock doors and windows, and report accountability to their leadership while keeping telephone lines open for communication. All gates to the post remain closed as law enforcement and military investigators secure the scene.

In response to the incident, local civilian schools in the vicinity took precautionary measures. Button Gwinnett Elementary, Joseph Martin Elementary, and Snelson Golden Middle School were placed on soft lockdown as a precaution, with normal dismissal times following once the lockdown was lifted. Similarly, Appling County Schools had briefly enforced a Level 1 lockdown before returning to regular operations.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp expressed support and sympathy for those affected, stating on social media, “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers.”

At the federal level, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed that President Donald Trump had been briefed on the shooting earlier today.

Authorities continue to withhold the suspect’s identity and any possible motive behind the shooting as the investigation is ongoing. Law enforcement presence remains substantial at Fort Stewart to ensure the safety of all personnel and residents.

This remains a developing situation. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
