GRAND BLANC TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A tragic mass shooting at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township on Sunday morning has left at least two people dead and eight others wounded, police confirmed.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:25 a.m. on September 28, 2025, at the church located in the 4200 block of McCandlish Road. According to Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye, the suspect, identified as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford from Burton, drove his pickup truck through the front doors of the church before exiting the vehicle and opening fire with an assault rifle.
Sanford was shot and killed by police officers in a shootout in the church parking lot shortly after the attack began.

Initial reports from authorities indicated that one person had died at the scene, but by 1 p.m., a second victim succumbed to gunshot wounds at a nearby hospital. Ten people were transported to area hospitals, with two in critical condition and seven in stable condition.
