Indianapolis, IN – Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson exited the team’s 2025 preseason opener against the Baltimore Ravens early in the first quarter due to an injury, with Daniel Jones coming in as his replacement.
The injury occurred after Ravens linebacker David Ojabo delivered a heavy sack on Richardson midway through the first quarter. Ojabo, who came unblocked off the Colts’ right side, fiercely pressured Richardson and brought him to the ground. After the hit, Richardson was visibly shaken and favoring his arm as he retreated to the sidelines.
The Colts later announced that Richardson had suffered a dislocated pinkie on his throwing hand, ruling him out for the rest of the game. The team labeled him as “day to day” as head coach Shane Steichen said they would evaluate their approach heading into their second preseason game, with Daniel Jones expected to take on a more prominent role. Jones, who is currently competing with Richardson for the starting quarterback position, took over for the Colts immediately following the injury.
Richardson, the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, had started the preseason game and completed two of three passes for 21 yards prior to his injury. His replacement, Daniel Jones, who is slated to start the next preseason game against the Green Bay Packers, led the Colts continuing the opening drive.
Colts trainers quickly attended to Richardson on the sidelines, and while he was examined, early indications suggested the injury was limited to the finger, without further complications to his arm or shoulder. However, the dislocated pinkie could affect his grip and throwing capability in the near term.
Despite the setback, Richardson is hopeful for a quick recovery. Team management is closely monitoring his status as the Colts prepare for the regular season, emphasizing the importance of depth at the quarterback position. Daniel Jones’ performance in Richardson’s absence will be a key factor as the quarterback battle intensifies.
This injury raises concerns about the Colts’ offensive continuity during the preseason but also showcases the significance of having an experienced backup like Jones ready to step in seamlessly.
