Nuno Mendes Seals Dramatic UEFA Super Cup Victory For PSG Over Tottenham

Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) claimed the 2025 UEFA Super Cup after a thrilling penalty shootout win against Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, completing a remarkable late comeback that crowned their season with a fifth trophy.

The match, played at the Stadio Friuli in Udine, Italy, saw Tottenham take an early two-goal lead in the second half thanks to defenders Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. Tottenham dominated for much of the game and appeared set to lift the trophy, with the English side appearing fitter after a longer preseason preparation.

However, PSG staged a stunning late rally, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes of regulation to level the score at 2-2. Lee Kang-in gave PSG hope with a fierce strike into the bottom corner in the 85th minute, followed by substitute Gonçalo Ramos who scored a dramatic equalizer in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

The match was eventually decided by penalties, where PSG triumphed 4-3. Nuno Mendes confidently converted the final, decisive penalty kick to secure the victory, marking the first UEFA Super Cup title in PSG’s history.

PSG’s head coach Luis Enrique acknowledged the dramatic turnaround but admitted his team “didn’t deserve” to win given Tottenham’s dominance for the majority of the match. He noted the contrasting fitness levels, with PSG having only trained for six days following their Club World Cup campaign, whereas Spurs had prepared for six weeks. “Sometimes football is unfair,” Enrique reflected, praising his players’ resilience and personalities during crunch moments.

Midfielder Vitinha highlighted PSG’s team spirit, saying, “Once someone fails, you have to help your colleague get back up,” underscoring their collective resolve as key to overcoming the odds.

This triumph places PSG among an elite group of UEFA Super Cup winners and adds a new name to the list dominated by Spanish clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and AC Milan. It also cements PSG’s impressive 2025 as the year they collected five trophies.

The UEFA Super Cup is contested annually between the most recent UEFA Champions League champions and Europa League winners. This year, the showdown between the reigning Champions League winners PSG and Europa League holders Tottenham produced one of the most dramatic finals in recent memory.
