Authorities arrested Tyler Robinson, 22, in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk at Utah Valley University (UVU) on September 10, 2025. Robinson, who has no known criminal history, was taken into custody after being identified through family tip-offs and evidence in the investigation.

According to Utah Governor Spencer Cox, Robinson was apprehended following information provided by a family member who reported that Robinson had confessed or implied his involvement in the shooting. Cox confirmed that Robinson had “become more political in recent years” and referenced a recent family dinner where Robinson discussed Kirk and his viewpoints prior to the event at UVU.

Robinson faces multiple serious charges, including aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, and obstruction of justice, as detailed in a probable cause affidavit reviewed by NBC News. While formal charges have yet to be filed, prosecutors are preparing documents for a preliminary court hearing expected early next week. Robinson is currently held without bail at Utah County Jail.

The FBI Director, Kash Patel, stated that Robinson was captured 33 hours after the shooting amid an intensive investigation that generated over 11,000 leads. The Justice Department is reviewing whether to pursue federal charges alongside state-level prosecution.

Robinson comes from a close-knit community in Washington, Utah, known for its strong social ties and church affiliation with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Neighbors expressed shock at the allegations, describing Robinson as a quiet youth with no prior indications of violent behavior.
