Suspected Stalker Ambushes Pennsylvania Officers, Killing Three in Deadly Shootout

North Codorus Township, PA — A stalking suspect ambushed five police officers serving warrants at a Pennsylvania home on September 17, fatally shooting three detectives and wounding two others in a brutal attack before being killed in a police shootout, authorities confirmed.

Matthew James Ruth, 24, was wanted on misdemeanor stalking charges related to a former girlfriend. When law enforcement officers from the Northern York County Regional Police arrived at the residence around 2:10 p.m. to serve warrants, Ruth launched a deadly surprise attack using an AR-style rifle outfitted with a suppressor, according to York County District Attorney Tim Barker.

Details from the investigation reveal officers noticed the front door was unlocked despite residents having secured it prior to leaving, suggesting Ruth was lying in wait. As officers entered, he opened fire at close range, striking four detectives immediately. Detective Sergeant Cody Becker, Detective Mark Baker, and Detective Isaiah Emenheiser were killed. The fourth detective was critically wounded but survived and began administering aid to his fallen colleagues and an injured deputy sheriff who had been wounded outside during an exchange of gunfire.

Authorities promptly returned fire in the brief but intense encounter, killing Ruth at the scene. The wounded officers were transported for medical treatment, with no further fatalities reported beyond the three detectives.

District Attorney Barker emphasized that the officers’ tactics and responses were justified given the circumstances. The ambush was described as a calculated and lethal assault on public safety personnel carrying out lawful duties.

Community response has been solemn and supportive, with local residents lining roads holding flags and placing flowers near the police department to honor the fallen. A procession of emergency vehicles carried the fallen officers, highlighting the profound impact of the tragedy on the Northern York County community.

Authorities have disclosed that prior to the ambush, there were concerning signs involving the suspect, including an incident last month where the victim’s pickup truck was set on fire, and Ruth surveilling the residence in camouflage, carrying a weapon, and observing neighbors with binoculars.

This deadly shooting underscores the dangers law enforcement officers face while serving warrants and responding to domestic violence-related cases. It has shaken the community and renewed calls for heightened awareness and prevention efforts related to stalking and domestic threats.

The investigation remains ongoing, with officials continuing to review all aspects of the case surrounding Matthew Ruth’s actions and law enforcement’s response.
