Michigan Synagogue Attack Suspect Dead After Ramming Incident; Family Lost in Lebanese Strike Amid Escalating Tensions

A 41-year-old man from Dearborn Heights, Michigan, suspected of ramming a truck into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield and opening fire, was found dead inside the vehicle following a confrontation with synagogue security, authorities confirmed Thursday.

The incident unfolded Thursday afternoon at the prominent synagogue, which also houses a school, prompting a massive law enforcement response and a shelter-in-place order within a one-mile radius. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard detailed how the suspect drove the truck through the synagogue doors, down a hallway, and came to a stop inside the building. Security officers engaged the attacker with gunfire as “something ignited in the vehicle,” producing thick black smoke, Bouchard said. A body was discovered inside the truck, and while the exact cause of death remains under investigation, federal agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) confirmed the suspect’s death.

Suspect Identified as Ayman Ghazali

The suspect has been identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali (also reported as Aman or Aean Gazali), a Lebanese-born U.S. citizen who entered the country in May 2011 on an IR1 immigrant visa. According to Department of Homeland Security (DHS) records, Ghazali applied for naturalization in October 2015 and became a naturalized citizen in February 2016. He worked as a restaurant staffer and resided on Gully Street off Ford Road in Dearborn Heights, where law enforcement established an active scene outside his home.

Dearborn Heights Mayor Mo Baydoun revealed that Ghazali had recently suffered a profound personal loss: several family members, including a niece and nephew, were killed in an Israeli airstrike on their home in Lebanon over the weekend. This tragedy occurred amid the ongoing U.S. and Israel-led war with Iran, which has heightened fears of retaliatory violence across the United States. Sources indicated the airstrike was part of broader regional conflicts, with Baydoun noting the suspect’s relatives died in the attack on their Lebanese residence.

Targeted Attack Under FBI Scrutiny

The FBI is investigating the assault as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” Law enforcement sources reported Ghazali was armed with a rifle, and the truck contained fireworks and an unidentified chemical agent that ignited post-crash. Preliminary information suggests he fired shots during the incident, though details are still emerging.

One synagogue security guard was struck by the truck, knocked unconscious, and hospitalized but is expected to recover. Miraculously, no other injuries were reported, and all individuals inside the building, including young children, have been accounted for. Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed outrage, highlighting the presence of infants under a year old and warning that online and media rhetoric can radicalize individuals. “This could have looked a lot more like Sandy Hook,” she said, referencing the 2012 school shooting.

Heightened Security Nationwide

The attack comes against a backdrop of rising antisemitic incidents and global tensions. Since the war with Iran escalated, Jewish institutions nationwide have bolstered security. An FBI alert warned of Iran’s aspirations to launch drone attacks in California as retaliation, prompting increased patrols at houses of worship in places like Los Angeles.

Baydoun condemned the violence unequivocally, stating, “No matter where violence occurs, whether in West Bloomfield or anywhere around in the world, harm against innocent people is something we must all stand firmly against.” He emphasized how international conflicts “too often find their way into our own neighborhoods.” Sheriff Bouchard refrained from labeling the incident terrorism but noted the context of recent geopolitical events.

Community Response and Investigation Ongoing

Temple Israel, like most U.S. synagogues, employs armed security, a measure credited with mitigating worse outcomes. Parents rushed to a reunification center for the synagogue’s schoolchildren. Federal, state, and local agencies, including the ATF’s Detroit field office, are leading the probe into the suspect’s motives, immigration history, and potential ties to broader threats.

Lebanese-American communities in Dearborn Heights, a hub for Arab immigrants, expressed shock. Baydoun urged unity, reminding residents of their “shared safety.” As investigations continue, authorities have urged vigilance at religious sites amid fears of copycat attacks.

This incident underscores the spillover of Middle East conflicts into American soil, raising questions about radicalization, immigration vetting, and community resilience in polarized times. Updates are expected as more details emerge from the ongoing probe.
