Sam Altman Reveals Gen Z and Millennials Treat ChatGPT as Personal Life Coach, College Students Lead the Charge

By Tech Insights Staff | May 14, 2025

In a candid discussion at a Sequoia Capital event, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlighted a fascinating generational divide in how people interact with ChatGPT. Younger users, particularly Gen Z and millennials, are increasingly turning to the AI chatbot not just as a tool, but as a trusted “life advisor” for everything from relationship dilemmas to major life decisions. Meanwhile, college students appear to be pushing the boundaries even further, integrating it into their daily lives with sophisticated, personalized setups.

Generational Differences in AI Usage

Altman described how usage patterns vary starkly across age groups. Older generations, he noted, primarily use ChatGPT as a sophisticated search engine—a smarter alternative to Google for quick facts and information retrieval. “They treat it like a replacement for search,” Altman said during the talk.

In contrast, younger demographics approach ChatGPT with a deeper level of integration. “Young people use it similar to how they’d use an operating system,” Altman explained. They craft complex prompts, connect it to personal files, and maintain memorized or saved custom setups. But it goes beyond productivity hacks: “They don’t really make life decisions without asking ChatGPT what they should do.”

College Students: The Vanguard of AI Adoption

Altman singled out college-aged users as particularly advanced adopters. An earlier OpenAI report underscored this trend, revealing that more than one-third of 18-to-24-year-olds in the U.S. regularly use ChatGPT—outpacing all other demographics. These users leverage the AI’s memory feature, which retains context from previous conversations, creating a “full context on every person in their life and what they’ve talked about,” as Altman put it.

This contextual awareness transforms ChatGPT into a digital confidant. Users seek advice on relationships, career choices, business strategies, and even medical queries. Some have replaced traditional talk therapy with AI sessions, finding the always-available, non-judgmental responses surprisingly effective.

Experts Divided on the Safety of AI Advice

While Altman’s observations paint an optimistic picture of AI’s role in daily life, experts remain split on its reliability for personal guidance. Critics warn that large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT, despite their sophistication, can hallucinate facts or provide biased advice based on training data. “It’s not a licensed therapist or doctor,” one AI ethicist cautioned in response to the trend.

However, emerging studies offer a counterpoint. Experiments have shown ChatGPT’s advice on common issues—like stress management or basic relationship tips—to be harmless and occasionally more empathetic than generic online resources. One study from Stanford University found that AI-generated motivational messages boosted user mood comparably to human-written ones in short-term trials.

“The difference is unbelievable in how a 20-year-old might use ChatGPT versus older generations,” Altman remarked.

Evolving Use Cases as ChatGPT Matures

Since its launch in late 2022, ChatGPT has evolved rapidly, with updates like memory functions, custom GPTs, and multimodal capabilities expanding its practical applications. OpenAI’s latest models, including GPT-4o, handle nuanced conversations with greater accuracy, fueling this shift toward advisory roles.

Altman’s comments come amid surging adoption. OpenAI reported over 200 million weekly active users as of early 2025, with premium subscriptions growing 40% year-over-year. The company’s valuation has soared past $150 billion, reflecting investor confidence in AI’s consumer potential.

Implications for Society and OpenAI’s Future

This generational reliance raises broader questions about AI’s influence on human decision-making. Proponents argue it democratizes access to advice, especially for those without resources for professional counseling. Detractors fear over-dependence could erode critical thinking or amplify misinformation.

OpenAI has not commented on the safety of using ChatGPT for life advice, though the company invests heavily in alignment research to mitigate risks. Altman emphasized the “cool and impressive” ingenuity of young users, hinting at future features tailored to power users.

As AI integrates deeper into personal lives, Altman’s insights signal a paradigm shift: ChatGPT is no longer just a novelty—it’s becoming a staple in how younger generations navigate an uncertain world.
