Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, has openly explained why he terminated several engineers who failed to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) tools promptly, emphasizing the critical role AI plays in the future of software development and innovation at the company.

In a recent Cheeky Pint podcast interview and several public statements, Armstrong described his decision to enforce an aggressive AI integration mandate among Coinbase’s engineering teams. When initial deadlines set by middle management suggested a gradual rollout of AI tools over one to two quarters, Armstrong took a different stance. He posted in the company’s Slack channel requiring all engineers to integrate AI into their workflows within a week. To enforce compliance, he scheduled a mandatory Saturday meeting for those who had not complied to explain their resistance directly to him.

When Saturday arrived, a small cohort of engineers joined the call. Armstrong recounted that while some provided legitimate reasons such as travel or exceptional circumstances, others simply had not embraced the new AI-driven approach. As a result, those without valid excuses were let go from the company. Armstrong candidly acknowledged that this “heavy-handed” approach was controversial internally, with some employees disliking the method, but stressed the necessity of this firm stance to convey AI’s importance.

Armstrong’s approach reflects a broader industry trend where tech leaders increasingly position AI adoption as indispensable for maintaining a competitive edge. Coinbase aims for a bold target: achieving 50% of its codebase written with AI assistance by the end of the quarter. The company supports this goal with monthly AI training sessions dubbed “AI speed runs,” designed to foster innovation, productivity, and creativity among engineers.

Despite the enthusiastic push for AI integration, Armstrong also highlighted the limits of AI, particularly in highly sensitive systems like cryptocurrency transactions. “You don’t want people vibe-coding these systems moving money,” he remarked, underlining that human oversight and rigorous code review remain crucial.

The adoption of AI has also expanded beyond engineering teams at Coinbase. Design staff and executives now make extensive use of AI in decision-making processes, with Armstrong himself relying heavily on AI tools in his role as CEO. This holistic adoption demonstrates Coinbase’s commitment to embedding AI throughout all levels of the company.

The emphasis on rapid AI integration and Armstrong’s willingness to fire noncompliant employees have stirred debate within the tech community. Some see it as a necessary step to adapt to a fast-evolving technological landscape, while others raise concerns about the workplace culture and the consequences of such strict enforcement policies.
